| Backyard Cooking To prevent flare-ups when barbecuing, spread lettuce leaves on the hot coals before barbecuing fatty meat (figure A). The lettuce will blacken but will not ignite.
Make a quick-and-easy drain plug for a foam ice chest. Take the top of a squeeze bottle (the kind you have to pull up in order to open), measure it and drill a hole that's exactly that size near the bottom of the chest. Push the top from the squeeze bottle into the hole and glue it in place with waterproof carpenter's glue (figure B).
To keep flies and bees at bay, hang a piece of raw bacon away from the picnic area. The flies and bees will be more attracted to the bacon than the goodies at the picnic.
To prevent picnic tablecloths from blowing in the wind, sew pockets into the corners and put old keys in each one to weight them down. Another option is to use large snack chip clips to clamp the cloth to the table .
Add a delicious flavor to your barbecue by sprinkling the coals with fresh herbs that have been soaked in water.
To marinate meats easily, place them in a plastic bag with the sauce and seal tightly. Simultaneously coat all the pieces by turning the bag once.
Throw on a few extra steaks, broil them over charcoal until they are partly done, then freeze them. Finish broiling them indoors for steaks with an authentic outdoor grilled taste.
Worried about undercooked chicken while barbecuing? One easy trick is to microwave the chicken for just a few minutes. This cooks the juicy areas near the bone first.
Place a bar of soap in an empty mesh onion bag. Hang the soap near an outdoor faucet for a handy place to clean up.
Instead of treating an entire piece of wooden outdoor furniture with preservative, just brush the product from the bottoms of the feet up approximately three inches on the legs. This will keep the furniture from absorbing water from the ground.
Spray plastic chairs with a solution of equal parts bleach and water. Wait five minutes, then wipe dry. This takes care of any mildew problems. Resources: grills and accessories
